Hello! I’m Giang, an international student from Vietnam and a proud Global Excellence Scholar. I’m currently pursuing an MSc in Sustainable Business Management (Tourism) at the University of Exeter. With a deep passion for sustainable development, I couldn’t imagine a better place to grow and learn how to make a difference.

My aspiration

The University of Exeter stood out to me because of its strong commitment to sustainability and global impact, perfectly aligning with my goals. I’m dedicated to using tourism as a key economic force to enhance people’s wellbeing and quality of life, especially within disadvantaged and vulnerable groups. My research focuses on sustainable tourism development and how decentralised tourism policies can stimulate economic growth and social development in Vietnam’s rural areas.

When I was applying to different Masters courses, I was fortunate to be offered several prestigious scholarships, including the Finland Government Scholarship from the Finnish Government and the International Excellence Scholarship from the University of Insubria in Italy. However, after careful consideration, I chose the University of Exeter because of its exceptional focus on sustainability, its top-notch academic programmes, and the honor of being a Global Excellence Scholar. Being part of a world-class institution, recognised for its research leadership as a member of the Russell Group, has reaffirmed my commitment to making a meaningful impact through my studies and future work.

When I applied to the University of Exeter, I found the application process to be clear and supportive, yet it required a thoughtful approach. Exeter values candidates who not only have strong academic backgrounds but also clear goals and a commitment to their chosen field. My tip for future students would be to focus on crafting a compelling personal statement that genuinely reflects your aspirations and why Exeter is the right fit for you. Highlight how your past experiences align with the University’s strengths such as its focus on sustainability, if relevant, and explain how Exeter’s resources will support your future goals. Remember to be specific and authentic, as this shows the admissions team who you truly are and what you bring to the Exeter community. Starting early and seeking feedback from mentors or friends on your application materials can also make a huge difference, helping you submit a well-rounded and polished application.

Embracing Sustainability – Excellent Academic Research Environment

One of the reasons I chose the University of Exeter is because it is ranked in the top 10 in the world for its progress towards delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2024 THE Impact Rankings. This recognition is not just a badge of honor but a testament to Exeter’s dedication to making a real difference in the world. The University has been particularly recognised for its efforts in Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Life Below Water (SDG 14). These achievements highlight Exeter’s leadership in sustainability and its commitment to creating a better future. You can read more about the University’s commitment to the UN SDG’s here.

Another reason I chose Exeter is because it’s renowned for its research excellence, consistently ranked among the top universities globally for its impact and innovation (for example in the Research Excellence Framework, which you can read more about here). Moreover, Exeter’s overall sustainability agenda integrates the SDGs into teaching and operations, encouraging students and staff to actively engage in sustainability efforts. From reducing the University’s carbon footprint to embedding sustainability into the curriculum, Exeter is committed to equipping future leaders with the tools to address global challenges. This holistic approach has reinforced its status as a leader in sustainability, making it a destination for those passionate about creating a better, more sustainable world.

The University of Exeter’s commitment to interdisciplinary research sets it apart. By bringing together experts from diverse fields like business, environmental science, and social policy, Exeter creates an exciting place to learn where I am encouraged to think critically and address sustainability challenges from multiple perspectives. This approach has helped me see the bigger picture of sustainable development, recognising how collaboration across sectors is vital.

One of the exciting things about Exeter’s research quality is the funding that research here attracts.  For example, the University has received grants from bodies such as UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the European Union to work on research addressing pressing global challenges – from climate change to social inequality.  As a student on the MSc Sustainable Business Management (Tourism) programme, being able to engage in research on sustainable tourism and policy development will enhance my academic experience, prepare me for a career dedicated to sustainable development, and lay the groundwork for pursuing a PhD. The University of Exeter therefore provides an ideal environment for me to develop the research skills and academic foundation needed for advanced studies.

While I partly chose Exeter for its academic strengths, I was also impressed by the University’s emphasis on creating a supportive environment for its students and the ways it helps them prepare for their futures.  For example, Exeter hosts numerous workshops, seminars, and networking events that help students build essential skills and connect with industry professionals. These opportunities have significantly enriched my learning experience and provided a valuable professional network that will be instrumental for my future career as a Sustainability Consultant.

Green Environment

The Penryn Campus is a reflection of Exeter’s commitment to sustainability. With eco-friendly facilities and green initiatives, it’s easy to feel inspired. The green campus aligns perfectly with my values and goals, providing the ideal environment for my academic journey in sustainable tourism.

The campus itself is designed with sustainability at its core, featuring energy-efficient buildings, extensive recycling programme, and biodiversity-friendly landscaping. The Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI), located right on campus, is a hub for cutting-edge research and innovation in sustainability. It’s not just about academics – students are encouraged to participate in green initiatives, such as biodiversity monitoring programme, community garden projects, and waste reduction campaigns. These hands-on activities have allowed me to directly contribute to the campus’s sustainability goals while gaining practical skills.

Additionally, Penryn Campus’s location in Cornwall is ideal for those like me who are passionate about the environment. The surrounding natural landscapes, including the beautiful Cornish coast and countryside, offer countless opportunities for outdoor activities and environmental research. Field trips and projects often take advantage of this setting, allowing us to apply our learning in real-world contexts. Whether it’s exploring marine ecosystems, participating in coastal clean-ups, or studying sustainable agriculture, the opportunities to connect with nature are endless.
