Hello – my name is Helena and I’ve just finished studying BSc Business and Environment at the Penryn Campus in Cornwall.

When I was looking at university courses, I knew I didn’t want to study business without sustainability at its core. In today’s world, I just don’t see the long-term value of a business degree that doesn’t properly engage with the pressing environmental challenges we’re facing. For me, the integration of sustainability within a business context was the biggest draw of the Business and Environment programme. It felt relevant, forward-thinking, and focused on the direction the world needs to move in.

Choosing to study in Cornwall was also a big part of my decision. I loved the idea that it wasn’t a dramatic leap into a huge city. The Penryn Campus felt like a transition; it offered independence and a full university experience, but in a way that wasn’t overwhelming. The campus is small and close-knit, and everyone is so friendly. And, of course, living by the sea is something not many universities can offer. Being able to walk or drive to the beach after lectures is something I’ve never taken for granted.

One of my favourite aspects of the programme has been the sense of community. Business and Environment feels like more than just a course, it’s a network.

We have regular forums each term, and there’s a real effort from the programme team to bring everyone together. I genuinely believe that at larger universities you wouldn’t know every single person on your course, but we do. We also have strong relationships with our lecturers; they’re approachable, supportive, and always open to discussion. That level of connection has made a huge difference to my experience.

I completed a placement year at JCB Finance, which was incredibly valuable. Not only did it give me real-world business experience, but it’s also opened doors for after graduation. I’d always encourage prospective students to take a placement year if they can, it adds so much to the degree.

Another thing that stands out is how much our feedback has genuinely shaped the course. Because Business and Environment is still relatively new, we’ve been able to see changes implemented based on our experiences. Modules have been adapted and improved for future cohorts. The feeling that you can leave a legacy and help shape the programme for others is quite special.

Looking back over the past four years, I can honestly say I’d recommend both the course and the campus without hesitation. It’s been challenging, engaging, and incredibly rewarding. For anyone interested in combining business with sustainability in a way that feels practical and future-focused, this course is a brilliant choice.
